Short on time and in need of a makeover? I can recommend you personal tips and tricks that I use often to beat the clock while looking effortlessly put-together. While I agree that getting a proper manicure, haircut, or buying more expensive well-made gear is necessary, sometimes there is just not enough resources to make it happen right this second (time and money). For instance, I have a friend’s wedding coming up this weekend, unfortunately, I waited till the last minute to go shopping and freshen up vital aspects of my overall look.
Face
One way to spruce up the face is to shape the brows. I had no time for a wax or thread this week; instead, I borrowed by boyfriend’s tiny beard trimmer and skimmed the very outer edges, grabbing the tiny bits of peach fuzz while leaving my brows full and prominent. Remington sells great grooming kits at the drugstore with a variety of attachments for different shapes and angles. The brows undoubtedly shape the face and make your eyes pop. Add a little eyebrow pencil and brow bone highlighter- Revlon’s ColorStay Brow Enhancer pencil/highlighter duo works wonders with tired, dull brows!
Hair
There is no doubt about the professional attention my hair and scalp are longing for… I need to get my Chiq tush to the salon! Sadly, it will have to wait till after the wedding festivities this weekend come to an end. I am a natural blonde, but I found out after years of toiling over highlights, lowlights, layers, and trims that I like my hair dark, dark brown- almost black. Not only is it easier up-keep, but less harsh products on my hair equals a glossy, bouncy mane! When I saw a hint of blonde root peaking out, I ran to CVS and picked up box of Garnier Nutrisse in soft black. Focusing on my roots, I used a comb to brush color out towards my ends, but never fully painted every inch of my hair. It is natural looking for the ends to be slightly lighter than the roots.
Nails
This may surprise you, but I do not enjoy getting my nails or toes shaped or painted. I can barely make it through the filing without twitching and jerking because I am so ticklish! Plus, I would rather spend that $100 or more on something I actually appreciate, like shoes. Unfortunately, manicured nails and toes are essential to a well-rounded, balanced image. Scruffy, dirty nails are far from ladylike, and for some reason guys tend to check out hands and feet with intent to judge. How did I battle my boring, formless nails? I applied a pink-nude coat of polish on the toes, and fancy stick-on nails from the drugstore. If you get a good package of nails with strong glue and a simple, classic pattern then you are set to go. Make sure you slightly slide the nail under the cuticle during application and file the ends to remove any bumps or snags
Accessories
A couple accessories that provide quick fabulosity for less include faux diamond earrings and bangin’ bags. Get a couple of rhinestone earrings from a less expensive store like Charlotte Russe, or even a couple of CZ studs on discount from Nordstrom Rack. Jewelry cleaner is your friend ladies, keeping cheaper jewelry from looking… well… cheap. In addition to delicious ear-wear, buy a few bags! You can get quality-looking bags from a plethora of stores, including AMIClubwear.com or Love Culture (which is very similar to Forever 21). Conversely, you can also invest money in one or two pricey bags that will last longer and match more of your wardrobe. American Apparel has sophisticated, simple bags that pair with almost anything!
Clothes
Creating the illusion of a high-priced wardrobe is easier said than done, but there are a few simple rules you can follow to make any store work for you.
- Bright colors, silky materials, soft fabrics: All of these characteristics create the impression of luxury.
- The right fit: Never buy an item with a funky fit. Improperly tailored outfits look messy.
- Handle with care: Inexpensive buys usually come with baggage, and by that I mean fragility. Cheap clothes need extra attention including hand washing, gentle cycle, and hang-dry.
Just to be clear, these instructions are best used occasionally! I will never fully recommend a woman to skimp on the proper care of her appearance. However, if you ever find your self stuck between beauty appointments, know that you can rely on this information to get you through the weekend. It’s our little secret.
